Rockwall, Texas
Texas' smallest county packs big-city dining, shopping, and lakeside entertainment on the shores of Lake Ray Hubbard — a natural day-trip pairing with a Lake Tawakoni stay
About Rockwall, Texas
Rockwall sits on the east shore of Lake Ray Hubbard about 45 minutes west of Anchor Inn Marina, and it makes an ideal day-trip pairing for Lake Tawakoni guests who want a change of pace from the marina. Where West Tawakoni is quiet and outdoorsy, Rockwall is lively and waterfront-urban — anchored by The Harbor district on Lake Ray Hubbard, with a lighthouse landmark, dining terraces with water views, live outdoor concerts, boutique shopping, and an active downtown square just a few minutes inland. It is one of the most visitor-ready small cities in North Texas and serves as a convenient stop coming to or from Dallas-Fort Worth.
The Harbor is the city's signature waterfront destination and the best single answer to "where should we go tonight?" from Anchor Inn. The hotel, condo, and entertainment complex along Lake Ray Hubbard hosts free summer concert series, waterfront restaurants, a movie theater, and regular fireworks shows on holiday weekends. Away from the water, historic downtown Rockwall wraps around the Rockwall County Courthouse and features boutiques, coffee shops, art galleries, and some of the best independent restaurants in the eastern Metroplex. For families, Urban Air Trampoline Park and Shenaniganz (a combo bowling, arcade, go-karts, and mini-golf venue) deliver hours of all-weather entertainment when the lake day is done.
Rockwall also works as a rainy-day plan. The Rockwall Historical Museum occupies an 1850s home with local artifacts spanning the county's Native American, agricultural, and railroad eras, and the Rockwall Community Playhouse stages productions year-round. For music and two-step fans, Southern Junction in nearby Royse City draws regional country acts and pairs live music with steakhouse dining. Shopping options range from the curated boutiques of downtown to the national retailers at Rockwall's outdoor centers off Interstate 30. After a day of dining, music, and browsing, the 45-minute drive back to Anchor Inn Marina puts you right back on the quiet shores of Lake Tawakoni for a sunset on the dock.
